Mexican Independence Day
I was so excited to celebrate my first real Mexican holiday while living here. Mexican Independence day celebrates Mexcio's Independence from Spain. On Septemeber 15 1810, Hidalgo gave the rousing speech that would inspire the Mexican people to stand up for freedom and independence. The speech is called the "Cry of Dolores" or "El Grito de Dolores." The actual Independance Day is September 16, but most of the celebrations begin the day before with a special cry at Midnight.
I borrowed a dress from a friend in order to celebrate. I loved wearing the dress and felt so pretty all day.
I also bought these super kitschy earrings that I absolutely love.
At school, we watched a performance with dancing, rope tricks and a mariachi band. I loved getting the chance to see all of the kids dress up. Everyone was super proud to be Mexican and I was excited to be a part of it.
After school, I came home and took a nap because I was super, super tired. My friend and I went to party to celebrate the day. We celebrated with great food, tequlia, music and conversation.
Our party host's family made pozole for everyone to share. It was so good that I couldn't help but have 2 servings.
It was a great evening with lots of new friends and really interesting talks. It was such a warm and friendly environment.
At Midnight, we came outside to raise the flag and shout out "Vive Mexico." Our great host led us all. It was a great celebration of Mexican culture and I was appreciative to be included in it.
